SharePoint - solution without a problem ?? Think again. It's no longer viable to use file stores for the vast array of documents an average company produces. Even advanced file systems such as NTFS do not provide the rich indexing, search, alerting and document management that collaborative workers require.

SharePoint actually defines two technologies available from Microsoft, one is free and the other is, well, not !

Windows Sharepoint Services V3 (WSS) is a free download for Windows 2003 Server and for many companies will provide all they need in terms of document management, collaboration and discussion groups. Integration with Office 2007 in particular is superb.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS2007) is designed for companies that need an industrial strength Portal solution with advanced indexing, search etc.  MOSS2007 is actually built on collections of WSS web sites and extends the capabilities of the latter.

MOSS 2007 & WSS in conjunction with Office 2003/2007 provide workers with a superb platform for document authoring, management and collaboration whether connected to the network or working offline (offline requires Office 2007)
